RAKU POTTERY

Raku is a style of pottery made famous by Japanese potters and is now found all over the world. Pieces are fired to a high temperature, removed from the kiln and, as made at Tiapapata, immediately buried in sawdust. Extreme temperature changes result in crackles on the glazes, an effect highly admired in this unusual ceramic form.

Raku fish are the most popular made at the Tiapapata Art Centre and some can be placed on steel stakes to decorate garden.
